CREATING AN INVITING GATHERING SPACE

University of Wisconsin-Madison

An inviting gathering space at University of Wisconsin-Madison

Union South at the University Wisconsin-Madison

We worked with the University of Wisconsin-Madison to help them address an underutilized space on their campus. The outdoor area of UW's Union South serves as a multi-purpose gathering space for students, faculty, and the community. The current space lacked adequate seating and was not comfortable for longer events.

After an initial site consultation, our design team put together a site plan that improved on the existing layout, withstood the Union's high traffic demands, and transformed it into an inviting gathering space.

Max-R worked with the Chicago Cubs to help them furnish some new renovations to their Left Field Porch. As part of their 1060 Project, the organization is committed to making investments to Wrigley Field and the surrounding neighborhood to "improve the guest experience and keep millions of Cubs fans coming back to Wrigley Field every year."

After an initial site consultation, our design team put together a site plan with multiple branded Laguna Bar Tables and Maywood Bar Side Chairs that complimented the goal they set for the space. In addition to the outdoor furniture, we also provided coordinated Recycling Stations and Portable Bars. The new space gives fans a relaxed environment to watch games and interact with each other in a more open setting.

Sustainability Takes Center Stage in Morrison, CO

Max-R and Red Rocks first partnered together in 2013 to outfit the Amphitheatre with our Oxford double stream waste and recycle bins. Throughout the years, Red Rocks has continued to add Max-R bins to their waste and recycle program. One of the additions included Round enclosures to collect waste, compost, and recycling and features a custom graphic application. Since their initial order, we worked with Red Rocks to retrofit their original Oxford double stream bins and converted them to a triple stream that collects compostables, landfill, and bottles & cans.

Max-R first partnered with Bates College in 2015 to design bins for the campus food service areas. After receiving their initial order, Bates College reached out with a unique need. They wanted a waste and recycle bin that had a funnel to help collect liquids. In conjunction with the Bates’ Custodial Supervisor and Sustainability Coordinator, Max-R’s Engineering and Design team created a waste and recycle bin that would allow users to discard of their leftover liquids. The unique stream was designed to be a part of their standard bin, but the circle opening would connect to a funnel that emptied into a bucket inside of the bin, allowing for quick and clean servicing of the bin.

Max-R partnered with the newly constructed US Bank Stadium to outfit their entire facility with waste and recycle bins. In conjunction with US Bank Stadium, we designed several bins customized to the needs of the specific location within the facility and the waste streams required for that area. In addition to their current needs and waste streams, we took into account the stadium’s desire for future compost collection and designed a bin that would easily transition to collect trash, recycling and compost to meet the team's current and future sustainability goals.

Customized Oxford Waste & Recycle Bins

The Milwaukee Brewers are our hometown team so needless to say we were excited when they came to Max-R to update their field level concourse areas with new waste and recycle bins. We designed two sets of bins for their needs: a double waste and recycle bin with a flat top and a single waste bin. Both sets of bins were branded to include the Miller Park logo and a navy trim to match the team colors.

The Max-R bins that we have on campus have been the impetus to forwarding our sustainability program. Students and faculty love the bins and the milk jug count has helped users to see the connection between their actions and the end product. They’ve been so well received on campus that not only are we planning on installing more, but it’s opened the door to have conversations and action items for other sustainability efforts throughout campus.

Max-R truly believes in ‘creating a better product that leads to a better future…’ and we have been very pleased with our business relationship with them.

Jan Addison

Deputy Director

Orange County Convention Center

Jan Addison, Deputy Director of the Orange County Convention Center had more to say about working with Max-R:

"In 2012, The Orange County Convention Center purchased over 500 recycle/waste receptacles from Max-R. The receptacles have proven to be exceptionally durable – no dents or scratches, the color remains sharp, etc. That is quite a feat considering we host over one million attendees annually and the receptacles are in constant use."

"Over 1,200 recycled milk jugs went into making each of the recycle/waste receptacles in our concourse areas and over 800 recycled milk jugs were used in each of our meeting room receptacles. We appreciated the fact that the receptacles created for the OCCC were not from new materials: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

"One of the core values of the Orange County Convention Center, the second largest center in the U.S., is acting in an environmentally responsible manner. Max-R truly believes in “creating a better product that leads to a better future...” and we have been very pleased with our business relationship with them. Max-R listened to our OCCC team, offered creative solutions to our needs, and have been extremely responsive."

Zero Waste Station In Use

The foundation of ZeroWaste and Sustainability is good relationships. Sustainability is a part of Max-R’s culture. When you’re developing your program, you want someone who will come through for you.

Karyn Kaplan

Zero Waste Program Manager

University of Oregon

When the University of Oregon had the opportunity to implement a new bin system on campus, they began by identifying colleges and universities that had zero waste programs in place that were seeing success. Max-R was recognized as a constant fixture on successful campuses across the country. In conjunction with university leadership and campus operations, the UO Zero Waste team identified what was important to them in a zero waste station.

The ability to customize and create a bin specific to the UO Zero Waste program was key. With specific serviceability requirements and the need for visuals and restrictive openings, the University of Oregon turned to Max-R to help develop a bin unique to their program and needs on campus.

The UO Zero Waste Program ultimately wanted to customize their zero waste station to be a simple and inviting system that would be easy for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus to use. They chose to employ a side loading bin with restrictive openings so that as users approach the bin they are able to identify the waste stream by the opening. In addition to the restrictive openings, graphics on the door are used to identify exactly what goes into each waste stream to cut down on contamination. Depending on the area of campus, some bins feature a hinged top for the waste stream collection to enable faculty and students to empty their own deskside bins, cutting down on contamination and custodial costs.
